Preventing hail in rural areas of the United States is controversial according to the article and lecture. The article states that cloud seeding is a method which has proven to be successful; the professor, in contrast, claims that this evidence is not sufficient to prove that this technique is effective.
The professor begins the lecture by stating that the chemicals used to seed the clouds can also cause the delay or absence of rain. Although the chemicals are used to promote rainfall and lessen the chance of hail, they might also cause the clouds to not release their moisture. This would cause the crops on farms to die from droughts, and the point of the technique is to limit crop losses for farmers.
Asian countries are said to have used this method to control hail. The professor, however, explains that this method works well in urban environments due to the presence of pollutants. In rural farming areas, this method might not work. The lack of pollution would limit the effectiveness of cloud seeding.
There have also been reports of hail decreasing in areas where clouds have been seeded. The lecturer claims that these results also showed that the surrounding areas also had reduced hail. This seems to indicate that the reduction of hail in one year might have been caused by changes in the weather and cannot be used to show that cloud seeding actually reduces dangerous hail storms.
