Volcanic island formation
The diagram represents how a volcanic island forms. Generally, this growth consists of nine stages.
The appearance of a volcanic island starts from pillow phase of preshield stage when the only volcano mouth exists under water. The next step is called hyaloclastic phase of protoshield stage when the volcano mouth begins to approach to the water surface. After that, the hydro-explosions happen and ash cone appears on the surface of island which begins to be noticeable above the water body due to a strong mist. The fourth stage is a formation of the ground around the former volcano above which a light mist remains. The fifth stage - the postshield one - includes a formation of cones which, however, vanishes in the next step when coral reefs and sediments appear and the island begins to decrease. During the rejuvenated stage lava flows on the surface of reefs and ash cone forms above reefs on different sides of the island meanwhile, the mist, after a short period of ceasing, strengthens. It leads to the coral atoll stage when coral reefs cover almost the whole surface of the volcano island. The last step - the guyot stage - can be described as total immersion back into the water with total covering by reefs.
