The professor argues that the memoir of chevalier is fairly accurate and reliable piece of historical source about European society in the eighteen century. She provides alternative explanations against the claims made about the reliability of the memoir. She argues that the loan given by merchants to chevalier did not suggest that he was poor. As we already know that chevalier used to party and gamble often during his stay in Switzerland. This lifestyle of chevalier required considerable amount of money. However, sometimes he had to sell some assets to raise money required for his lavish lifestyle, which took some time. Hence he took loans from merchants which were to be repaid as soon as possible. She further argues that he used to write about his conversations between him and Voltaire in his journal every day. So while writing about the conversations in his memoir, these journals became the source and were reliable nature. Regarding his escape from prison, the processor suggests that there were other prisoners who had more powerful friends than chevalier but were not able to bribe their way out of the prison. Furthermore, the roof of his cell had to be repaired around the time when chevalier had supposedly escaped.
