In this set of materials, both the reading passage and the lecturer discuss the ability of humpback whales which enables them to migrate long distances, The reading passage firmly states these whales are using the stars for navigation and provides three reasons to confirm this possibility; however, the the professor casts doubt on these three reasons.
Firstly, the text contends that the whales are brilliant enough to use stars for navigation. In other words, they have a brain power far stronger than other animals. On the other hand, the professor articulates that there is no connection between thier intelligence and navigation by stars. He explains that there are some other animals such as ducks which are using the stars to find their path and also they are not highly intelligent. As a result there are no strong evidence which make a connection between intelligence and using of stars for navigation.
Moreover, the essay asserts that humpback whales migrate in a straight line, and they cannot depend on land features for adjusting their path. As a result, it is possible that they uses stars for guidance in finding their way. On the contrary, the professor avers that there is another explanation for their straight line movement. The whales have biomagnetite in their head which helps them to sense earth magnetic field and via that they can move in a straight line.
Finally, the reading passage alleges that these whales sometimes straight up their head above the water and looks forward which is famed as spy-hopping; thus, one possibility for this action is that whales are looking at stars. Conversely, the lecturer avers that there are some other animals that do the same action such as sharks. The sharks do this behaviour for hunting and besides some animals do the spy-hopping during the day. As a result, it is far-fetched that whales do this action for looking at the stars.
