The diagram below shows the life cycle of a species of a large fish called the salmon.
The diagram illustrates the stages in the life of salmon, a large fish.
Overall, the life cycle is a natural process that contains 3 cyclical phases, beginning with the laying of eggs and ending with an adult salmon returning to its place of birth.
The process begins when an adult salmon lays eggs in the upper region of the river where the current is slow moving. After around 5-6 months among the reeds on the pebbly bed of the river, the eggs hatch and a baby fish termed fry emerges. Measuring about 3 to 8 centimetres long, the fry will spend approximately 4 years in the lower region of the river where it is fast moving.
At the end of 4 years, the next phase begins where smolts emerge, which measures around 12 to 15 centimetres and travels into the open sea where they stay for approximately 5 years. During this time, they grow into an adult salmon measuring about 70 to 76 centimetres. The adult salmon travels back to the upper region of the river to lay its eggs and the life cycle begins again.
