The invention of smartphones has greatly impacted everyone globally. Many of us own a smartphone and it is a common sight to see Singaporeans using them while walking, travelling and even when working. It is lightweight and portable, often used by both working adults or students to meet their various needs. In my family, the smartphone is the most important modern-day invention that caters to our needs as we are able to do a myriad of things without disrupting other family members since each one us has our phones.
Smartphones give my family and I access to the Internet and entertainment at the tip of our fingers. Often, we are as busy as bees, working or studying around the clock. We rarely have a chance to sleep a wink and our workload continues to increase. Our hectic lifestyles rarely allow us personal time. Amidst our busy schedules, smartphones offer my family to have information on the go or watch movies while commuting. It takes time to travel and while travelling we can immerse ourselves in a PDF storybook or a heart-warming Korean drama. This enables us to kill two birds with one stone while travelling and to unwind after a hectic day at work or school. My family thus greatly appreciates the wonders of the invention of smartphones as it has greatly helped us to make valuable use of our time.
One advantage of the smartphone is being able to communicate with one another immediately which is why my family greatly relies on the smartphone. When my family and I are busy at school or at work, we need not worry about one another. Smartphones allow us to contact each other almost instantly with a simple call or text. This helps us to be less worried. Smartphones has the function of tracking another family member’s location in case of an emergency. I can send pictures so that my parents can have a piece of mind that I am safe and sound. Smartphones are a bridge between my family members and me in this day and age.
Television, on the other hand, is something my family can definitely do without. In comparison to smartphones, the television is at least twenty times the size of a smartphone. It is too bulky and inconvenient to bring around unlike a smartphone. The television also has to be connected to a power socket which is not portable and its location is fixed. With a smartphone that has almost as many functions or more as compared to television, my family can definitely do without a television. The amount of time spent on the phone is also more than what is spent on television. Thus, the television is definitely unimportant in my household.
The television also prevents my family from bonding. When we are watching the television, we rarely talk to each other as we want to pay close attention to the storyline of addictive dramas. My family has a meal rule that no mobile phones are to be used during meals giving us the opportunity to chit-chat and improve family relations. Thus, the smartphone is not a hindrance as unlike the television we can bond over meals.
It can be said that although modern inventions like television are made with detailed thinking, they may not be as useful as they claim to be. Televisions impedes family bonding time as all eyes are glued to the screen. Smartphones, on the other hand, provides entertainment and has numerous functions in a portable device. My family definitely prefers smartphones to television as they are feasible and convenient. Thus, depending on each families’ needs different types of modern inventions cater to different types of families.
