Possibilities of living on Mars.
The reading and the lecture are about Mars and the possibility of life on it. The author of the reading feels that Mars is the best option after Earth for the people to live and mentions his reasons. However, the lecturer challenges all the points made by the author and those can be explored in the subsequent paragraphs.
First of all, the professor implies that analysis from the Mars Express Mission does not prove the presence of liquid water on Mars. Moreover, the problem with the analysis is that it is based on a comparison between Mars and the Earth's atmosphere. He also adds the point that Mars is not geologically active to make comparison with the Earth. Even more, The temperature on Mars is -70 degrees celsius, which indicates it is far too cold for the liquid water to maintain. And also, the waves can be from the other source of elements. On the other hand, the reading states that the Mission sent electromagnetic waves to analyze the presence of water on the Martian surface.
Secondly, the writer posits that the discovery of microbes in the harsh environment of Mars makes it favorable for the people to live, as the Mars environment coincides with present Antarctica. On the contrary, the tutor argues that the Martian atmosphere is too harsh for the human being to live as the human body conditions are too weak to endure the harsh climate. The climate of Mars is extreme with temperatures ranging between -87 to -5 degrees celsius. Furthermore, the human can either burn or freeze to death at these temperatures on Mars.
Finally, the academician provides that Curiosity rover is not preferably reliable and it has shown cases of malfunction. Additionally, Europe has worked on the prediction of methane gas on the planet Mars, but The ESA in 2016 managed to observe the whole surface of Mars and found no traces methane. This shows us no possibility of life on Mars. This point contradicts the point made in the reading. The reading shows that Curiosity rover has detected traces of methane gas on Mars and it has increased even more in the cascade of years.
