Some people say Supermarkets have the responsibility to reduce the amount of packaging for products they sell. Others believe that it is the consumer's responsibility to avoid buying products which have a lot of packaging.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Presently, with increased focus towards safeguarding the ecology, people are getting increasingly sensitive towards measures to minimize the production of waste. Packaging remains one of the biggest menaces which is a by-product of civilization in this modern world. In spite of this, people unknowingly are consuming heavy packaged products thereby increasing the disposable waste and hence deteriorating the environment. Here, I would discuss on the two important opinions to curb this menace and would also aim to deduce on the best way forward.
Supermarkets, I believe, is a major point of sale so their role to influence the consumer cannot be undermined. It is of paramount importance to understand that a reduction in packaging, howsoever small it is, in a regular consumed item will have a butterfly / cascading effect on the nigger picture. For example, making a small change like replacing the plastic covers of bread by paper bags or thinning the plastic of the milk bottles thereby saving on plastic. What goes in favor of supermarkets is, that the packaging is required to give that extra degree of safety to the product which sometimes is a demand of the customer. Consequently, this becomes the need of the hour for the store to maintain the store credibility. Consumer, though is “king” but has only the options which are available to him at the store. Hence, the store does drive the consumer behavior. Either the customer buys what is available at the store or let go of the demand.
Contrary to the thoughts in the above paragraph, there is also a section of people who base their thoughts on the prominent point, demand generates supply. This goes without saying, that the supply would reduce if a section of the consumer would neglect a certain product because of the excess packaging. Eventually, this would become a vicious circle which would result in the end of product life cycle. Either the excess packaging issue would have to be tackled else the product would phase out.
Consequently, both the above thoughts need to be cohesively worked upon to support the already disturbed ecological imbalance. Furthermore, I also firmly believe and stand by the statement "Be the change you want to see in the world". Moreover, the onus definitely would be on us to safeguard our environment.
