Sending humans to Mars have some problems.
In the reading passage, the author concentrates on several problems facing astronauts during Mars missions. However, the lecturer states that some solutions already have been discovered to solve the mentioned problems and respectively points out problems with all author's assertions.
Firstly, the author argues that it takes at least two years to travel to Mars and get back to Earth, which causes some issues related to carrying enough food, water, and oxygen for such a long journey. Nevertheless, the lecturer brings up the fact that astronauts can use hydroponics, which is a technique to grow plants in water, not in the soil. This method requires a little space and can be employed in spacecraft. The technique also releases clean water and oxygen, which can provide fresh water and oxygen needed by astronauts.
Secondly, the author suggests that the Mars mission necessarily entails spending a long time in the zero-gravity environment of space, which has negative impacts on human health. By contrast, the lecturer challenges this idea and states that over many years, a lot of astronauts have experienced the zero-gravity environment, and they already have used a number of techniques to overcome the problems arising in these trips. For example, regular exercising and consuming some substances can help them maintain their body health and avoid problems like decreased muscle mass and lower bone density.
Lastly, the author asserts that during a mission to Mars, there would be dangerous levels of space radiation emitted from the sun. Conversely, the lecturer refutes this claim and clarifies that solar radiation is not at a dangerous level most of the time. Harmful radiation occurs occasionally and for this reason, special shields have been set up in spacecraft. After detecting dangerous levels of solar radiation by particular instruments installed, astronauts can move under these protected shields.
