Claim: The best test of an argument is its ability to convince someone with an opposing viewpoint.
Reason: Only by being forced to defend an idea against the doubts and contrasting views of others does one really discover the value of that idea.
The claim that the best test of an argument is its ability to convince someone with an opposing viewpoint is a plausible one. The reason given for this claim is that only by being forced to defend an idea against the doubts and contrasting views of others does one really discover the value of that idea. The basic concept of an argument should consider the ability to represent viewpoint in a way that convinces the ones who are opposing it. It is through discussion one understands the merits and demerits of any argument. Academic scholarship is a result of thorough discussion of ideas taking into consideration the contrasting factors and viewpoints of those opposing the notion.
Discussions are not just about defending ones claim and belief, but also the ability to make others understand your point of view. One can tell through discussions who is well versed with the argument and who isn’t. Being fond of debates and discussions I enjoy being challenged on various viewpoints involving current affairs, social issues and many more. Many times, I have come across those whose viewpoints differed from my own and it is through these discussions and arguments that I have been able to enhance my knowledge about the subject. I appreciate being challenged by my peers because through that process I am able to examine and understand my belief and knowledge for the same. Sometimes, I do realize that I might not have enough understanding for the topic or I am not in a position to hold a valid discussion. But at the same time this helped my shape my viewpoints and opinions on such issues.
Throughout the history there are ideas or arguments that are perhaps not understood or claimed to be out of time, it is in these situations that the ones who oppose them refuse to believe and later is discovered to be entirely valid. For example, Galileo’s claim that earth revolves around the sun and not the other way round was discarded by other contemporaries. Despite his multiple attempts Galileo couldn’t convince them. Later through scientific research it was established that earth revolves around the sun and not vice versa. This shows that convincing the opposing ideas is a one good mark of an argument and its understanding.
It is understandable that everyone has different perspective or a viewpoint towards different topics. Each individual has his own understanding of an argument and is motivated by his own beliefs and opinions. Understanding others perspective is thus sometimes more important than having been able to change others viewpoints.
In conclusion the ability to convince someone with an opposing viewpoint is the best test, as being forced to defend the argument against those contrasting it is plausible. But at the same time, considering the beliefs and opinions of those against the notion is important for academic scholarship.
