The graph and table below give information about water use worldwide and water consumption in two different countries.
The line graph illustrates how much water was used for three different sectors in the world, and the table gives information about the water consumption in Brazil and Democratic Republic of Congo during the period of 100 years from 1900 to 2000.
Overall, there was a general upward trend in the use of water for agriculture, industry and households over the given period. It is also clear that agriculture consumed more water than the other two sectors.
To begin with, the consumption of water for agriculture started at around 500 km3 in the first year before increasing dramatically to 3,000 km3 one hundred years later. In comparison, there was merely a relatively small amount of water used for industrial and domestic sector in the beginning. Afterwards, the figures experienced a noticeable rise to roughly 1,300 km3 for the former and 500 km3 for the latter.
The population of Brazil was 176 million in the year 2000, which was by far higher than that of Democratic Republic of Congo, with only 5.2 million people. Brazil covered 26,500 km2 of irrigated land compared to only 100 km2 in Congo. Regarding the water use, each individual in Brazil used 359 m3, whereas the figure for the other country was much lower, at 8 m3 per person.
