The development of tourism contributed to English becoming the most prominent language in the world. Some people think that this will lead to English becoming the only language to be spoken globally.
What are the advantages and disadvantages to having one language in the world?
International tourism is increasing the demand for the English language, and it is even argued that English may eventually become the universal language for the whole world. I believe having a common language for the entire world population can be beneficial for international relations but may also lead to the deterioration of cultural identity.
On the one hand, a sole language for the entire globe could result in some obvious benefits. Firstly, both political and business relations could significantly improve since the communications between states and companies would become smoother and more efficient. Cases of miscommunication would also be avoided since interactions would take place directly between the parties involved rather than through third-party translators. Secondly, having a common world language would allow people to spend the time and energy used to learn foreign languages on more beneficial activities such as learning other academic subjects. This would lead to higher levels of scientific achievements.
On the other hand, the problems associated with this phenomenon can be two-fold. To start with, if everyone in the world spoke the same language, then the need for such professionals as foreign languages teachers and translators would disappear, which would make a large number of individuals employed in these areas unemployed. Even more importantly, the problems would be felt on a cultural level as well because people from different nationalities would not be able to identify themselves with their own languages anymore. This would also diminish the importance of cultural heritage created in the national languages of individual countries.
In conclusion, speaking one global language could bring about both advantages such as improved business and political relations and disadvantages like increased unemployment.
