From an overall perspective, it is clear that the numbers of total marriages, 2nd marriages, and divorces saw an upward trend, whereas the reverse pattern could be observed in the figure for 1st marriages over the given period.
Looking at the chart in more detail, in 1975, the number of total marriages was 500 thousand. The number of 1st marriages was highest, at 350 thousand while the figure for 2nd marriages was significantly lower, at 150 thousand. However, the divorces accounted for the lowest number, at 100 thousand.
After reaching a peak of 650 thousand in 1985, the number of total marriages declined sharply to 580 thousand in 2000. The quantity of 1st marriages increased moderately to 400 thousand in 1985, after which this figure went down considerably to 300 thousand in 2000. A dramatic rise to 250 thousand was witnessed in the number of 2nd marriages from 1975 to 2000. There was also a steady rise to 250 thousand in the quantity of divorces.
