These days in many countries fewer and fewer people want to become teachers, particularly in secondary schools. What are the reasons for this and how could the problem be solved?
A generation ago, teaching in a high school was considered as a popular and well-respected profession. Nonetheless, nowadays, there has been a substantial drop in people who desire to become teachers in our society. This essay will give some major reasons and propose potential solutions.
One of the main problems is that teachers are not well-paid today. Despite having responsibilities and impact on the community, there is a huge gap in the income of secondary school teachers and other lucrative careers such as medical, finance, law, engineering, etc. For instance, in my country, even government school teachers are forced to work as tuition guides and lecturers as their salary is hard to make ends meet. Therefore, the solution is for the government to increase the teachers’ income so that it can attract more graduates to choose this career path.
Another problem is that most children misbehave and act violently at school. As a result, teachers need to educate good manners at the same time, while teaching the curriculum lessons. It leads teachers to feel stressed, and depressed and give up their jobs. Moreover, students always tend to be right when the teachers give detentions or punishments to cheeky and rude students. However, in this situation, parents are to blame. To tackle this issue, parents should teach their children a sense to respect and look up to their teachers. In this way, students will follow the school rules, reducing the burden on teachers.
One last problem is that teachers nowadays do not have work-life balance. They must arrive at school at around 7 and leave at 4. Not only that, when they get home, they are snowed under paperwork load, marking homework, preparing lessons and doing other job-related tasks. Hence, teachers feel their job is tiring, frustrating, and dead-end. In other words, they do not have any job satisfaction. The way forward could be to cut the teachers’ work and hire some teaching assistants to help them which can make teaching an easier job.
To conclude, teaching is avoided choosing in many countries for reasons such as low salaries, pupils’ misbehavior, and unorganized work-life balance. Consequently, the issues should be taken action seriously in the long run. Otherwise, it will harm education around the world and affect the well-being of the next generation. In my personal opinion, parents and governments are the most responsible when narrowing the scope.
