Many of the products we buy nowadays break or wear out very quickly.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of this for manufacturers and the public?
Many items today are perishable in a relatively short period of time. While this trend may bring increased income to manufacturers and affordable prices to the public, the downsides cannot be overlooked.
To begin with the advantages, making fragile products can be of great benefit to manufacturers. In fact, the quicker products are worn out, the sooner people may have to replace them. As a result, the necessity of frequently replacing clothes amplifies the sales volumes of them, consequently bolstering their revenues. This can also be demonstrated through the example of shoe brand call ‘Bitis’ when they produce shoes that are too durable, making buyers have no need to replace them. This leads to the shoes not being able to be sold on the market and leading to the bankruptcy of the brand. Therefore, producing low-durability items is also an important factor in selling products and creating revenue. Regarding the public, they can be beneficial from the low-cost product. More specifically, when manufacturers opt for shorter lifespans in their products, they often price them more competitively. Consequently, consumers can enjoy the wide range of products with reasonable prices.
However advantageous this change can be, the erosion of consumer trust and limitation of quality options are the main drawbacks that come along. Firstly, it cannot be denied that less durable commodities can damage the trust between the sellers and consumers, which can even make people stop buying from those shops. In a restaurant, for example, the ingredients play a vital role in ensuring the fresh and safety of a dish; if purchased food products cannot stay longer, they may compromise the quality of the dish. Therefore, to avoid such results, chefs have to switch to more reputable suppliers. Moreover, frequently replacement for low-quality products can cause to financial loss leading to customer’s dissatisfaction. All of these things severely damage the company’s reputation.
In conclusion, the increasing in short-live products can lead to loss of customer trust and satisfaction, although there are financial benefits for companies and affordability for consumers. Hence, Therefore, there needs to be a balance of quality to maintain the imperative in pursuing sustainable consumption.
