The table compares the percentage of students who attended four different types of secondary schools in 2000, 2005, 2009.
Looking at the table, overall, The proportion of pupils in the specialist, grammar, voluntary- controlled schools witnessed a downward trend whereas that of community schools experienced an upward trend over the period. Throughout the examined period, the rate of learners coming to voluntary-controlled schools was the highest while that of students in specialist schools registered the lowest out of four types.
At the beginning of the period, the percentage of students attending grammar schools was the highest point of over half of total learners but in 2009, this figure significantly decreased to one out of two students. The similar trend was seen in the percentage of people coming to grammar schools which collapsed from 24% in 2000 to 12% in 9 years later. There was a gradual decline in the rate of students who attended specialist schools from 12% in 2000 to 10% in 2009
In contrast, only 12% of school children went to community schools in the year 2000, but this proportion rose significantly to 32% in 2005 and then 58% in 2009. In that year, not only was this the highest attendance figure for the four types of schools, but also the percentage of pupils in community schools was higher than the combined percentage of children attending the other three types of secondary school.
