The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
The bar chart illustrates a survey conducted in England and Wales with regard to the amount of households in owned and rented accommodation over the 93-year period.
It is clear that the proportion of families owning accommodation saw a considerable increase from 1918 to 2011. By contrast, the demand for rented houses among households fell dramatically over the same period.
In 1918, close to 80% of residents in England and Wales renting accommodation, which was almost fourfold the percentage of households in owned houses. However, the gap between them was gradually shrunk during the first 53 years of the period. By 1981, the proportion of rented as well as owned houses among citizens was exactly the same, at 50%.
Since then, the number of families owning accommodation rose by approximately 20%, peaking at 70% in 2001. Meanwhile, the equivalent figure for households in rented places saw a 10% decline from 1981 to 2001. In the last year of the surveyed period, the percentage of households in owned accommodation accounted for 61%, which was well twice as high that of their counterparts.
