The chart below shows estimated world illiteracy rates by region and by gender for the year 2000
The bar graph compares the different rates in world illiteracy between men and women in various of regions in 2000. As can be seen from the chart, the female illiteracy rates was much higher than index of male in most regions.
In 2000, South Asia experienced the highest level of illiteracy in both gender.While the male rates stood at 33%, this figure of female was one and a half times the former. For the estimation in Arab States and Sub-Saharan African, the pattern is similar. The rates of female was much lower with just 29%. Female illiteracy estimation slightly declined to 48% in Sub-Saharan Africa compared to precisely 30% of male rates.
Developed countries saw the smallest rate of both gender with 2% of female and only 1% of male. The figure almost stood at the same level of around 10% in Latin America and Caribbean. However, in East Asia and Oceania witnessed a considerable difference between female and male (20% and 8%).
