The graph below shows the contribution of three sectors – agriculture, manufacturing and business and financial services – to the UK economy in the twentieth century.
The graph provides information about how three different industries contribute to the economic growth of the UK over a century period from 1900 to 2000. In order words, it illustrates the proportion of agriculture, manufacturing and business and financial services contribution.
There were two clear trends visible, Agriculture and Manufacturing were the two major contributors to the UK economy from the outset of the period. Even though, Agriculture figures raised a little from under 50% in 1900 to just above 50% in 1950, it experienced a dramatic drop in the next 50 years. To be precise, after the year 1950, Agriculture proportion surprisingly sunk to around 10%, which was even lower than Manufacturing figure in the same year, then hit its lowest point in 2000 with under 5%. Likewise, manufacturing contribution also followed the same pattern, started with approximately 45% in 1900, the figure slowly decreased to about 15% by the end of the period, where Business and Financial sector exceed both of them.
In contrast, the business and financial proportion growth steadily over the period. In order words, it began with just under 5% then slowly increased and surpassed Agriculture figure by 1975 with 20%, while still lower than Manufacturing percentage about 10%. Finally, this sector end up as the main contributor to the UK economy with about 35% of the contribution, almost doubled the proportion of the two other in total.
Overall, from the beginning to the end of the twentieth century there was a tectonic shift between sectors contribution in the UK economy. Agriculture industry turn from the main contributor to the least important, meanwhile, the business and financial sector were reversed.
