Essay topics:

The graph below shows average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.

The graph highlights how much carbon dioxide (CO2) each individual emitted in four European countries over a 40-year period, between 1967 and 2007 with the assessed data given in metric tons (mts).

Overall, it is observed that carbon dioxide emissions from the UK and Sweden resulted in a downward trend while that of Italy and Portugal increased in general. The UK polluted the most throughout the period while Portugal did the least.

Looking at the details, in the United Kingdom, each resident polluted around 11 mts in 1967. Having remained stable in the first decade, the figure saw a gradual fall to approximately 7 mts until 2007. As regards Sweden, despite growing sharply over 10 mts within a year, the pollution dropped significantly to under 6 mts, ending the period.

If we look at Italy, it went in the opposite direction. Each Italian was responsible for just above 4 mts in 1967. It went up steadily to nearly 8 mts in 1997, taking over Sweden, before staying constant until 2007. This paralleled the growth of emissions in Portugal, increasing consistently until 1997, reaching over 5 mts when it recovered.
