The graph below shows avarage number of UK commuters travelling each day by car, bus or train between 1970 and 2030.
The line graph compares the figure for daily travel by workers in the UK using three different forms of transport, namely car? train and bus, over a period of 60 years. Overall, it is clear that car becomes by far the most popular means of transport for UK commuters over the period shown. It is also noticeable that while the number of people who use the car and train increases gradually, the number of bus users decreases steadily.
Looking at the line graph in more detail, we can see that in 1970, around 5 million people used the car to travel to work on a daily basis compared to the bus and train were used about 4 million and 2 million people respectively. Ove the following 30 years, the number of UK commuters driving to work rose considerably to roughly 7 million and the figure for rail passengers reached 3 million. By contrast, there was a small drop of approximately 0,5 million in the number of bus users.
Looking into future, by 2030, the number of workers who commute by car is predicted reach its peak of 9 million and train users will have risen to about 5 million. However, the bus will become a less popular choice for UK commuters with only 3 million daily uses.
