The bar chart illustrates the average amount of waste disposed of in one European country in terms of landfill, burning and dumping at sea.
Overall, the amount of waste disposed to landfill decreased dramatically in four years period, whereas there was a gradual increase in the figure for burning.
In 2005, 1800 million tonnes was the amount of rubbish went into landfill, while the quantity of waste incinerated and waste dumped at sea were just 500 and 600 respectively. However, there was a sharp decline in the amount of rubbish disposed to landfill, with one- third amount of rubbish in 2005. At the same time, the amount of waste went into landfill was surpassed by that of waste burned.
The quantity of waste incinerated was just 500 million tonnes in 2005; however, it rose steadily and reached its peak in 2008 with 900 million tonnes. In contrast, waste dumped at sea witnessed a fluctuation from exactly 600 million tonnes in 2005, followed by over 600 million tonnes in 2007 before a decline to 500 million tonnes in 2008
