A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college.
In this day and age, the quality of education in the formative years is one of the most important factors for a holistic development of any individual. A question then arises; should the curriculum for all students untill they enter college be the same throughout the nation? I would contend that this should be the case but with cetain flexibilities available to the students.
A uniform curriculum will be very benefitial from the students' perspective. Many students tend to study in more than one schools owing to the peripatetic nature of their parents' jobs. In such cases, the students don't have to worry about falling behind in their studies and can go about their education worry-free.
A standardized curriculum will also ensure equality of opportunity for students from all walks of life. Today, in India's case, we see that many rural schools follow a very lax curriculum compared to their urban counterparts. Standardization of curriculum across the nation would be a great equalizer for rural students, who currently suffer a lot once they get out of school and struggle to ace national entrance examinations for admission in the most prestigious colleges in the country.
Also, in today's world of cut-throat competition, a fixed syllabus will allow for a more uniform and fair evaluation of students. Such a system will be a boon, considering the sheer magnitude of competitors, where every mark can make a difference.
However, I believe that making the system too rigid will also have its downsides. Each student is different from the other. Young students should be encouraged to explore these differences and the curriculum should help them find their own path and explore their interests. Flexibility to opt for certain subjects which may be of more interest to some students than the other, should be made. Prescribing the exact same curriculum to every student, without alllowing for any flexibility, can have the opposite of the intended effect.
All in all, a uniform curriculum will definitely be better for the students. However, certain flexibility should be given to students to decide some portion of their curriculum to help them pursue their interests.
