The first chart below shows the results of a survey which sampled a cross-section of 100,000 people asking if they traveled abroad and why they traveled for the period 1994-98.

The second chart shows their destinations over the same period.

The chart above indicates the survey result of reason the UK residents visited overseas and bar chart below illustrates the locations of travel from 1994 to 1998. Four reasons such as holiday, business, visits for people and other reasons, were categorised as well as, Europe, the US and other regions were distributed.

Overall, travellers for holiday increased far the most and the others only increased slightly. Also, Europe accounted for the most volume of travellers.

Holiday occupied the most by 15,246 while other reasons accounted for only 982, which is even much lower rate than visitors for friend and relatives which had 2,689 in 1994. However, all the categories except business declined in year of 1995. Business increased slightly by 30, recorded 3,188. Again, holiday jumped up to 17,896 in 1996 and exceeded over 20,000 in 1998, as well as business and visits to people showed same trend as holiday. Despite other reasons demonstrated same trend, but it again fluctuated in 1998, dropped to 990.

Western Europe accounted for the most visited location in all years, however, North America had the least level of visits. EU dropped a little in 1995 but accelerated to increase until 1998. The US and other areas increased slowly and never declined in the periods.
