News stories on TV and in newspapers are very often accompanied by pictures. Some people say that these pictures are more effective than words. What is your opinion about this?
According to some people, the photos that complement news reports on TV or in newspapers have a greater impact than the stories themselves. I do support this argument.
To begin with, the sense of vision is the strongest of the five senses possessed by humans. Visuals like photos or videos pack a lot of information in very little space. In most cases, without even reading the text, readers can get a decent idea of the news story by simply looking at the pictures. A reporter, with pictorial presentation, can explain a news piece better as the public has some base to understand the reference. For instance, if a journalist covers a live story of a damaged flyover, without showing any visual content it will not be possible to explain the severity of the situation.
Secondly, pictures often act as an evidence in certain circumstances such as in crime reporting. Furthermore, they help spread awareness amongst the common man about a certain gang of criminals who are on the run by projecting, on the TV, any information that is available with the police and the media. Sometimes, beautiful photos help in covering travel stories where the breath-taking landscape talks volumes about the travel destination without which the whole story may not be effective at all. What is more, certain cultures and food can be explained only through the form of photographs. Even the latest fashion cannot be expressed with the help of mere words.
Just as there are two sides to one coin, there may be certain cons to showing images along with the news on the idiot box. This is often the case when crime is being reported and certain distorted pictures of the victim’s dead body are being showcased. Viewers especially adolescents can be extremely disturbed by such visuals.
To conclude, just as every garden has weed, images accompanying news items can have their downside but if used prudently by the media, they can be a powerful tool for imparting information to the public at large
