TPO48: Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific methods proposed in the reading passage

The reading and the lecture are both about the methods used to prevent the decreasing and extinction of the frogs. The author of the reading believes that there are three useful methods to save the frogs. The lecturer challenges the statements made by the author. He is of the opinion that none of these methods are practical.

First of all, The author claims that pesticides used by humans can cause a harmful and deadly effect on frogs. He suggests that the government should pass a law preventing the extensive use of pesticides in the areas closed to the frogs. The professor, on the other hand, argues that reducing the use of pesticides is not economically practical. He explains that farmers depend on pesticides in growing their crops to decrease crop losses and stay competitive in the market. Farmers who are not allowed to use pesticide will have a lower amount of crops and lower yields if compared with other farmers.

Secondly, it is mentioned in the article that fungus can be deadly for frogs. As a result, we should use antifungal on a large-scale to treat the infective frogs. The professor, however, rebuts this argument by stating that it is hard to apply the antifungal treatment on a large-scale. Instead, it needs to be applied to each individual which is completely unpractical. Furthermore, treating each infected frog will not cease the fungus from transferring to their offsprings. Therefore, it is required to apply the treatment again and again on each generation. The professor concludes that this technique is complicated and expensive.

Finally, it is mentioned in the article that we should protect the water natural habitat from the extensive use of water. This argument is challenged by the speaker by asserting that prohibiting humans from use extra amount of water will not help in protecting frogs. He elaborates on this by saying that global warming is the main cause of water disappearance from myriads lakes and wetlands leading to many species extinction. Consequently, if there were no changes in global warming, the frog would suffer more and more extinction.
