In this set of material, the reading passage states that there is not an universal agreement on the use of the great houses-massive stone building with hundreds of rooms- of belong to the settlements of Chaco Canton in the American Southwest. The reading expresses three theories for type of the use of the great houses from archaeologists' language and support them, however the professor finds all hypothesizes unconvincing. The information the lecture provides contradicts the fact outlined in the reading.
First of all, the reading declares that these houses were entirely residential and also they are similar to the apartment buildings of native American Southwest which people have been staying for years even centuries, in contrast the professor claims that it is true that the outside of the houses looks like native buildings in Southwest of America, however inside of great houses is different. If the houses were residential, it would have a lot of fireplaces for cooking or heating of a large number of people, however fewer fireplaces were found in there.
Second, the author of reading believes that these houses may have used for storing food supplies like grain maze which was the main crop in the Chaco, on the contrary the lecture contends that any grain of maze or maze's containers did not found neither in rooms nor in the floor.
Third, the reading proposes that since a lot of broken pots discovered in a mound near of one house as known Pueblo Alto, it is possible that great houses were suitable for taking place the rituals. These broken pots were belonging to containers which people were eating food into; conversely the lecture refutes this theory. The professor states that among the broken pots found a lot of other materials like building's materials as stone and plaster and so on, consequently this mound could have been a trash mound and the workers were feeding their meals into the pots.
