the graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.
The line graph illustrates the quantity of people from 65 years old in three countries - japan, sweden and usa over a 100-year period, from 1940 to 2040. In general, the percentage of this population group in all nations has an upward trend during the mentioned time.
With regard to japan, in 1940, the elderly accounted for 5% and slighly decreased after 10 years to about 4% before levelling off at this point for more than 2 decades. In the late 20th century, the figure tended to increase gradually, back to the level of 1940 in 2005. Especially, the number is predicted to have a surge in the next 40 years, reaching more than 25% of the population.
Even though sweden and usa have the same trend as japan, their patterns are more alike. At the begining of the period, the proportions of 65-and-over people were 6% and 10% for sweden and The United States alternatively. These figures rose dramatically and both doubled in 1980 before a decline. While the downward trend of sweden stopped before 2000, this of America is projected to continue until 2020.
