The diagram depicts the process of electricity generation in a hydroelectric power station.
Overall, it can be seen that the process by which electricity is produced in a power station is a multistep, cyclical process, which consists of 3 main stages.
In the first stage, water moves to dam from a river. In that stage water is collected at reservoir, which is called higher reservoir. There is a intake below the dam which ensures flow of water to produce electricity during daytime. Reversible turbines form the second stage and the turbines operate a generator and water is kept on the lower reservoir in the day. In the third and final stage , electricity is produced by the generator. The produced electricity then go through the power lines to the national grid, from where it is distributed among consumer.
In the night, water is pumped from lower reservoir back into high-level reservoir and intake is closed to keep water in the higher reservoir for generating electricity.
