Recent figure show an increase in violent crime among youngsters under the age of 18. Some psychologists claim that the basic reason for this is that children these days are not getting the social and emotional learning they need from parents and teachers.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Statistics have proven an increasing violence in crime amongst children within the age bracket of 18 years and below, so according to some educational experts, lack of social and emotional understanding are fundamental reasons for this development. In my opinion, I vehemently disagree to this term as these children are mostly swayed by their friends, as well as the society as a whole.
One good reason to debunk inadequate social and emotional training from parents and teachers as a reason for an increased crime rate in children is that the friends they associate with mostly influence their thoughts and actions. In other words, children who interact and play with their peers on daily basis, especially in schools, result to drastic measures in order to get back at those that may have offended them. In addition, they tend to prove their maturity level, confidence and strength through the things they do. To cite an example, more and more youngsters have been reported to have caused harm and destroyed properties belonging to their mates in schools because of disagreements. These violent actions are punishable according to the laws of the school.
Another point to consider is their involvement online and on social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, as most underaged children go as far as falsifying their age just to create an account. Most of these sites promote immoral and corrupt activities such as protests and theft with deadly weapons, through the contents and videos they read and view respectively, and as a result, such practises becomes their next line of action. At present, the world has made them believe that they can get what they want through violence of any sort, which they may show forth at any given opportunity.
To recapitulate, while psychologists sometimes claim that underaged kids lacking teachers and parental guidance result to more and more violent crimes, I believe that their social life with friends outside their homes, as well as the society contribute significantly to such development.
