The chart below gives information about car ownership per household in the UK from 1975 to 2005.
The line graph illustrates the changes in car ownership proportion in the UK over 30 year-period, starting from 2005.
It can be seen from the graph while the percentage of people having two and three cars experienced an upward trend, the opposite was true for that of those having no car from 1975 to 2005. 1 car ownership rate remained the same despite a dip in 1985s.
At the beginning, nearly half of the British did not have regular use of a car. Around 43 % and 45% of people in the UK owned a car and no car, respectively. It was uncommon for families to own two or three cars with only around 5% for each ownership.
There were considerable changes in the car ownership figures in 1985. The biggest decline by nearly 20% was seen in the proportion of households having no car. From then, this figure continued to fall gradually, reaching at about 22% in 2005. Despite experiencing the same scenario in 1985, the percentage of 1 car ownership recovered at 45% at the end of the period. In contrast, the 2-car-ownership rose steadily to nearly 15% in 2005 while the figure for 3-car-ownership increased by two times, eventually reaching to approximately 10% in the end.
