The given table illustrates data on the underground railway systems in 6 major cities, namely London, Paris, Tokyo, Washington DC, Kyoto and Los Angeles.
Overall, a prominent feature is that the London underground railway system is the oldest and, moreover, has the longest route. The Tokyo underground railway system, on the other hand, serves annually the greatest number of passengers.
In terms of opening date, the network in London came into operation in 1863. Subsequently, between 1990 and 2001, Paris, Tokyo, Washington DC, Kyoto and Los Angeles inaugurated the underground railway systems.
With regard to the route length, the London network covers 394 kilometres, whereas the Kyoto network covers a mere 11 kilometres. In Washington DC and Tokyo the route length is 126 kilometres and 155 kilometres respectively. Paris has the second largest route, of 199 kilometres, and Los Angeles the second shortest one, of only 28 kilometres.
However, looking at the yearly ridership, the figures are widely different. The underground railway system in Tokyo serves 1927 million passengers per year, followed by the system in Paris, which serves annually 1191 million passengers. The network in London is used by 775 passengers per year, compared to Washington DC, where the figure is significantly lower, at 144 million. The lowest riderships are recorded in Kyoto and Los Angeles, at 45 million and 50 million respectively.
