The table below gives information on visitor statistics for 1996, 1998 and 2000 for various World Heritage sites in Australia
The table compares the number of people went to different World Heritage places in Australia between 1996 and 2000.
Generally, the total number of visitors to those places showed an upward trend, excepting Central Eastern Rainforest Reserve and Macquarie Island. Besides, the Great Barrier Reef was the most popular in all of the location and the opposite was true for Macquarie Island.
In 1996, 1,670,000 tourists paid a visit to the Great Barrier Reef, three times higher as the Blue Mountains and four times as the Tasmania Wilderness. Over the two years ensuing, there was a dramatic increase of almost twice as many visitors to the Great Barrier Reef, followed by another slight rise about 200,000 people in 2000. The number of travellers in both the Blue Mountains and the Tasmania Wilderness also experienced a mild growth to 581,000 and 483,000 at the last year, respectively.
Regarding the other destinations, the Central Eastern Rainforest Reserve ranked second in terms of popularity, that picked about 800,000 tourists in 1996, while the figure for Macquarie Island only had 350 visiting. After 4 years, the amount of people entered both sites above decreased mildly to 770,000 and 330 respectively. The remaining place, 84,000 travellers chose to visit Shark Bay in 1996, two years later the figure went up 102,000 persons before falling down 89,000 individuals at the end of the period.
