Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Whether voluntary work should be a compulsory part of high schools’ curriculum remains a controversial question. While a number of people highly praised the merits of unpaid community service, others claim that obliged voluntary work can have some downsides. From my point of view, the latter holds true for a variety of reasons.
First and foremost, balancing time between academic schoolwork and voluntary activities is a strenuous part to most students. It is an irrefutable fact when doing volunteer work, a student must dedicate a great deal of his time to charities and voluntary organisations, helping deprived people in the community and protecting the environment. This will bring invaluable experience and knowledge to those who can manipulate their time. However, for students who lack time management skills, along with innumerable school assignments, compulsory unpaid community service can place a huge burden on them, depriving their energy and contributing to exhaustion and tiredness. As a consequence, those students are likely to develop health problems and worsen their academic performance.
Secondly, some students may take advantage of community services to neglect other activities once it is made a compulsory part in high schools’ programmes. For example, a teenager can use voluntary work as an excuse for his ignorance of schoolwork and household chores. More seriously, some students may lie to their parents that they are participating in community services, but in fact, they are being heavily absorbed in online games or hanging around with bad people. This can increase their chances of getting lured to social evils such as crime or drug abuse and ruin their future door.
Last but not least, there are numerous impoverished students who struggle everyday life with part-time jobs to pay their schools’ tuition fees. If unpaid voluntary work is an obliged part of the schools’ programme, those students will miss out on part-time job opportunities and therefore not have sufficient money to pay for high school education. As a result, they will either be discouraged from pursuing further knowledge or run the chances of dropping out of school.
In conclusion, unpaid community service can possess some negative sides. It can not only be a contributory factor to declining health, worsening academic performances but also spoil students’ opportunities both to continue education and get a brighter future.
