memoir of Chevalier de Seingalt
The reading and the lecture are both discussing about the Chevalier's memoir which he wrote his life and adventures. Whereas the author of the reading states that his memoir has a value in the European historical society. Moreover, the author of the article states that the Chevalier invented many events to make his life seem more interesting than it really was. However, the speaker agreed with the reading on the influence of this memoir. In contrast, she mentioned this memoir is reliable and accurate. Also, she disputes this argument by providing three main reasons.
First of all, according to the passage, evidence has shown that the Chevalier borrowed a huge amount of money. In his memoir he claimed that he was very rich. Thus, Critics argued that he made that up in his memoir. In contrast, the speaker refutes this argument. She mentions that the reason for Chevalier to loan money is that he was waiting for his money to arrive. She added that he loved parties and gambling which make Chevalier to not wait for his money.
Secondly, the reading claim that critics are also questioned about the possibility of occurrence of the famous conversation for Chevalier with Voltaire. Nevertheless, the speaker believes that Chevalier has wrote down the whole conversation and kept for many years hidden.
Finally, the reading states that also critics are questioned the possibility of Chevalier's escape. He escaped from notorious prison in Italy through a hole in the ceiling by using only piece of metal and climbed to the roof. Additionally, the reading made an argument that the jailers were bribed to free him. However, the speaker challenged this argument. She mentioned that he was not connected with powerful men in the prison. Moreover, she added that a document of repairing the roof has been found in that days. A question can be raised why they asked to fix their roof unless he truly escaped through that hole.
